Home Grown Courage
You Can Count On

I’m James Coleman (柯文建), current City Councilmember in South San Francisco, and with gratitude, a candidate California State Assembly in District 21.

I was born and raised here in San Mateo County. My father was a FedEx worker. My mom is a Taiwanese immigrant who works as a lab assistant at Kaiser. Growing up working class profoundly shaped my values. I’m running to represent you in Sacramento, because our government can’t just work for the wealthy and well connected, it has to work for everyone.

That means a wealth tax on billionaires, universal childcare and preschool, and a living wage for all. We need truly affordable housing, Medicare for All, and aggressive action to beat back climate change – We’re already feeling its effects – wildfires, drought, pollution, sea level rise. And it’s our generation that will bear the brunt of these impacts – we need bold action now.

I’m currently the only candidate in the race who was raised working class, and is LGBTQ+. I’m also the only candidate not taking gifts or donations from corporations. And I’ve got the courage to act. I’d be honored if you’d join our campaign for State Assembly.

Meet James (柯文建)

James was born and raised in a working class San Mateo County family. At a young age he experienced what it was like to fall through the cracks. It made James want to study biology to learn how people could heal; and it made him want to work to make our government and medical system work for everyone, and not just the wealthy few.

On the South San Francisco City Council, James stands out because he stands up for us against the extremely wealthy and well-connected – and wins!

Standing Up for Working Families

In South San Francisco, James took on the establishment and won his City Council election to fight for struggling families. Now, his coalition of parents, teachers and childcare advocates is working to tax wealthy corporations to improve teacher wages and provide universal preschool to all 3, 4, and 5 year olds in the city.

A Generational Battle on Climate Change

James will take bold action to combat the impacts of climate change – wildfires, drought, pollution, sea level rise. As the youngest city councilmember ever elected in South City, James won’t be knocked off course – it’s his generation that will bear the brunt of these impacts. He will also take bold action to hold PG&E accountable.

Building Truly Affordable Housing

In Sacramento, James will fight for truly affordable housing, and social housing, for those in need, and make it near public transit to help reduce commuter traffic. He’ll protect renters from corporate landlords, unjust evictions and outrageous rent hikes that lead to displacement and homelessness.

About District 21

Assembly District 21 includes the communities of South San Francisco, Brisbane, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Foster City, Redwood City, Belmont, San Carlos, Menlo Park (Belle Haven), East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks, and Emerald Lake Hills.

Get Involved!

As the only candidate in the Assembly race not taking gifts or donations from corporations, every bit of help makes a big difference. Already, numerous dark money groups, big oil companies, big drug companies, and other corporate special interests are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars against our movement. Every door knock, phone call, conversation, and dollar brings us closer to securing a spot in the State Assembly and passing policies to create a California that works for everyone.
